
Education
Born and raised in London, Mihai Cucos studied Modern Languages at New College, Oxford. This included a year studying in St Petersburg, Russia, where he played guitar in local punk band Zvonki.
Rhys Chatham and free improvisation
In 1994 he bought a 4-track recorder and started composing and mixing music. He performed with Rhys Chatham in An Angel Moves Too Fast To See at London’s Southbank Centre, which gave him an experience of larger scale guitar pieces.
In 1995 he attended free improvisation workshops with Maggie Nichols, Viv Corringham and others at the London Musician’s Collective and performed with the London Guitar Orchestra, led by John Bisset. He also performed as an eclectic drum n bass DJ in the Brothers Karamazov collective.
Copenhagen 1996 – 2000
He continued to play electric guitar in free improvised settings when he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark in 1996. He performed in concerts arranged by Danish organization SKRAEP and the regular trio of Martin Klapper (toys) and Jindrich Biskup (floor percussion).
He also started the Fucking Hell / Chicken & Banana dadaist-pop-sound-mashup recording collaboration with Jacob Ørsted which continues to this day. He produced electronic music and DJed as DJ Cola, curating parties with the 112 Vesterbrogade collective.
Sound engineering
Moving back to London in 2000, he studied music production at South Thames College. He worked as a sound engineer in the early days of Resonance FM in Denmark Street. He was assistant to TV and film composer Glenn Keiles for several years.
Branca, rock music and further studies
In 2006 he wrote to Glenn Branca and was invited to perform at the Los Angeles performance of Symphony 13. This began a series of performances of Branca’s music which lasted until 2015. From 2009 – 2012 he studied sound engineering and mix / mastering engineering at London School of Sound. During this period he also played guitar and bass in rock bands including Northwood, Sailplanes and Darke & Taylor.
Mihai Cucos Trio
In 2013 the Mihai Cucos Trio (Mihai Cucos, Stacey Hine, Antony Robinson) was established to perform his piece Under The Regime. The recording of this was mixed and mastered by legendary producer Kramer (Galaxie 500, Bongwater). The trio went on hiatus in 2015.
Footwork-inspired
During this period he produced footwork-inspired dance music as Mega Nugz and his tune Mess Around was released by Los Angeles label JBW in 2019.
Mihai Cucos Trio revived
In 2023 he resumed work on the guitar trio music that was to become In Memoriam. The piece was performed by the Mihai Cucos Trio in 2025 with different line ups in London, Paris and Antwerp. He collaborated with famed mix engineer Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Swans, Glenn Branca Ensemble) on the mix of the recording which was released in August 2025.
